What is a Sofa?
Historically the idea of a Sofa was a bench that is cushioned or covered in blankets and has the seating capacity for four or more people. They were designed with arms. Sofas are better for homeowners as it can host more people. Formal places are mostly furnished with sofas. There is a wide range of sofas available in the market from small sectionals, recliners to the big bulky sectionals.
What is a couch?
Historically couches were furniture to lay on. Thus, they were designed armless. However, it is hard to find an armless couch nowadays. Couches are kind of furniture that has an informal application. Your pet or kids are allowed on a couch. You enjoy your late night movie or Netflix shows with chips or drinks sitting on it, at the weekend you have snacks with your family on the couch. Couches usually have three seats and are smaller than the sofas.
What is a loveseat?
A love seat is a two seater sofa. They may have arms or may not. Loveseats are usually smaller than the traditional couches. The relation between ‘love’ and ‘loveseat’ or how and why the word ‘love’ got paired with the word ‘seat’ to name this kind of two-seaters, is unknown.
However, if you’re a romantic couple you might place one across the sectionals in the living room instead of a single chair.
Differences between a sofa and couch:
Sofa and Couch, these two words are being used interchangeably for many years. There have been so many twists an tweaks with their design. And every twisted or tweaked form was named after either ‘sofa’ or ‘couch’. Therefore, at the end of the day, we can say, there is no difference between them at all. You may concentrate on the design, color, build and materials of them! And if it fits the theme of your living room, it really doesn’t matter whether it’s a sofa or a couch.
Differences between sofa and loveseat:
Sofas are larger than loveseats. Sofas usually come in lots of different style and variation. However, loveseats are just cushioned two-seaters. A sofa can be of different seating capacity like four-seater, five-seater, seven-seaters etc but loveseats are bound to be two-seaters.
Other different types of sofa:
Sectional sofas are modular sofas that you can arrange in a number of different ways. In simple words, a sectional sofa set is divided into different section so that you can arrange them as you like. The modular design of a sectional is a little bit more convenient when compared to other sofa types. Because, as the units are small and separable to each other you can easily move those small sofa units, which is a lot easier than moving a whole 5-seater. So, moving to a new place would be a lot easier with a sectional sofa.
Sleeper sofas usually have a hidden mattress that can be unfolded to form a bed. Although sleeper sofas might have a folding mechanism that opens and closes easily. If your sofa lack such a mechanism, you would be struggling to unfold it. So, make sure that it has such a mechanism before buying one.
Sleeper sofas are less than 5 feet or 60 inches wide and these are perfect for one person to sleep on. Some twin sleeper sofas have a mattress that is around 40 inches in width. And their length could be nearly 85 inches.
There are queen size sleeper sofas available that is perfect for seating three people and a comfortable bed for two people.
However, an adult might find a twin size sleeper sofa too small and restricting.
Japanese word “futon” simply means bed. But in America futons are sofas that can be turned into a guest bed. In American households, futons are used as a versatile piece of furniture. Regardless apartments or dorms, they often serve as beds.
As futons are seats that can be unfolded into beds, you should be considering where you are going to use it. If you are using it your children’s room where you might need to fold and unfold it in a daily basis then you must try to buy one that has the necessary mechanism for folding and unfolding it easily.
Reclining sofa takes you to the next level of comfort. In Reclining sofas the backrest, headrest etc can be adjusted to ensure a better and comfortable seating. It provides extra seating space for the family as the headrest or backrest etc can be adjusted to a lying position so that one individual doesn’t need to occupy multiple seats if he/she decides to lay down. However, the headrest, backrest or footrest of reclining sofa is joined via a complex mechanism and can not be moved individually.
Power seater or Power reclining sofa:
In a power reclining sofa the headrest, footrest, and backrest can be moved individually. You have to move or adjust the parts of a reclining sofa manually but with a power seater or power reclining sofa, you don’t have to do that. Everything can be controlled with a touch of a button.
