Taking measurements to determine whether your next sofa would fit in your living room or not!
Before buying a sofa you need to take some measurements inside your house to ensure that your newly bought sofa could easily be carried to your living room through the entryways. And it would fit into your living room as well.
Consider taking two different kinds of measurement.
In case you live in a small house, you need to measure the space that you want to allocate for your sofa inside your living room. And then choose a sofa with a dimension that would fit in your allocated space.
Otherwise, you need to take the approx dimension of the sofa or the kind of sofa that you are planning to buy.
And then mark your floor according to that dimension so that you could get a (kind of) visualization of how much space the sofa is going to occupy. I’m going to elaborate the process step by step below,
Things you’ll need:
- Measurement tape.
- Masking tape.
Okay, let’s take that you have the approx dimension in your head. So, we are going to proceed to mark the floor.
Stretch the measuring tape as length and mark either end of the tape with masking tape. You may put the length marks before a wall. As the longer side of a sofa is usually placed before a wall.
In a sectional sofa, there might be both chairs on one side and a chaise on the other side. This type of combination might confuse you a little bit. Because the chaise side is shorter than the chair side.
In this case, you might consider the longest width of the sofa, probably the width of the chair side.
Place the measuring tape on each of the length marks and stretch it upright from the length marks as the width and mark with masking tape.
You can pull lines to join the marks to get a estimate on how much space is going to be occupied by the sofa.
*** If you are planning to place your sofa before a window, ensure that the height of the sofa does not surpass the windowsill.
****Take measurements to learn how wide your entryways are. Then ask the representative at the furniture store, what is the package dimension of the item that you want to buy. So that you could determine whether the item could be carried to your living room hassle free!
Bonus: Taking measurements for a curtain.
There are 3 different styles to hang a curtain. These three approaches are followed by people all over America.
In the standard style, the bottom of the curtain rests just above or below the windowsill. This creates a traditional and tailored look. The curtain hangs from 6″ above the top of the window. And spreads a minimum of 3 inches beyond each end of the window.
This type of curtains conceals the window frame with fabric as well as grant a maximum light exposure with fully drawn curtains.
If you are living in a smaller apartment then you can create the illusion of taller ceilings and a larger room by hanging curtains from a closer point to the ceiling.
Match the curtains to the wall color help make the walls look extended, and prevent dividing the wall with curtains.
They may be of 84″, 96″ or 108″ tall.
Extra long curtains look gorgeous. And they have to hang in such a way that the fabric puddles on the floor as much as 9 inches.
